What is the whining dog meme?
The whining dog meme, also called the hm hm hm dog or the German Shepherd whining meme, is a 9-second TikTok clip of a German Shepherd sitting on a bathroom floor, gazing up into the phone and whining in short bursts that rise and fall like “hm, hm, hm”. The earliest known post is from 3 August 2025, by the repost account @pet.pet.pet.pet.pet with the caption “What is he saying”. Instagram Reels pages then wrote the whine out as stock-chart emoji, Hm📈hm📉, and from autumn 2025 the clip became a staple of brainrot and “lobotomy” edits.

Who is the whining dog? Taco and the original video
Know Your Meme, the page most answers about this meme rely on, lists the owner as unknown and the first post as a repost account. The footage itself points somewhere more specific.
In June 2026 a TikTok account called The Whining Dog Taco (@thewhiningdogtaco, about 57,000 followers) began posting the same clip in higher quality than any repost, along with new videos of the same German Shepherd in the same bathroom, being petted on the same hexagon tiles. Its profile introduces her as Taco, a female German Shepherd born in Finland on 12 September 2022, whose skills are whining and wreaking havoc.
