Old photo animator
Animate Old Photos into Video
To animate old photos is to turn one still family picture into a short clip where the people blink, smile and turn their heads, the effect MyHeritage made famous with Deep Nostalgia in 2021. Here your scan becomes the first frame of the video, so every face, crease and bit of film grain starts exactly as printed.
One photo · Portrait, couple, group or whole-scene motion · 5 or 10 s · MP4 in the photo’s own shape · Failed videos are refunded
Bring your photo to life
1. Your old photo
JPG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB, at least 300 px on the short side. Crop away the album page and frame; one clear face works best.
2. What should move?
3. Model, length and quality
The video keeps the shape of your photo (portrait, square or landscape).
A short direction in your own words, such as “she looks up and smiles at the camera”. Leave it empty for the style above.
Start with one old photo.
Your video is saved only in your account. We never publish it.
Videos from free accounts carry a moving tryh3.com watermark; any purchase unlocks the clean file.

Examples from other tools: a sepia portrait smiling, a family group and a creased print moving.
What does “animate old photos” mean?
Animate old photos means using AI to turn a still vintage picture, usually a scanned family portrait, into a few seconds of video in which the person breathes, blinks, smiles or turns their head, or the whole scene starts moving. The idea went mainstream when MyHeritage launched Deep Nostalgia on 25 February 2021; today general image-to-video models do the same job with more control.
This page does it with image-to-video: your photo is the first frame and the model writes the next 5 or 10 seconds. The movement is invented, not recovered. Nobody can know how your great-grandmother really smiled, so treat the result as a tribute and label it as AI when you share it.
A 5-second clip on Seedance 2.0 Mini at 720p costs 18 credits (about $0.50 on the Studio monthly plan); prices run from 9 to 483 credits across models, lengths and resolutions.
Animate old photos: the facts
| What it is | AI image-to-video that makes a still old photo move for a few seconds. |
|---|---|
| Also called | Bring old photos to life, old photos into videos, AI animate photo, photo to video. |
| What you upload | One photo: a scan, or a phone picture of the print. Black-and-white, sepia and faded colour all work. |
| What you get | An MP4 in the same shape as your photo, 480p to 1080p depending on the model. |
| Motion styles | Gentle portrait, two people, group photo or whole scene, plus an optional note in your own words. |
| Faces | The photo is frame one, so every face starts exactly as printed; the prompt forbids beautifying, de-ageing or colourising. |
| Length | 5 or 10 seconds per photo. |
| Models | Seedance 2.0 Mini (default), Seedance 2.0 Fast, Seedance 2.0 Pro, Seedance 2.5, MiniMax H3 and Wan 3.0. |
| Watermark | Free accounts get a moving tryh3.com mark; any purchase removes it, also from earlier videos. |
| If it fails | Credits come back automatically. A photo Seedance 2.5 does not accept costs nothing. |
Old photos into videos: examples
Six old photos brought to life, from a single sepia portrait to a six-person family group, a creased print and a street scene. These are other tools’ public examples, credited under each clip; none was made with TryH3, but they show the kinds of motion the four styles here aim for.
Notice what good results keep: the crease on the damaged print, the grain, the black-and-white tone. That is the test to apply to your own clip.
How to animate old photos to video in 4 steps
From a print in a shoebox to an MP4 on your phone in about five minutes.
- 01
Scan or photograph the print
Use a flatbed scanner at 300–600 dpi, or a phone photo taken straight on in soft daylight with no glare. Crop away the album page, frame and fingers.
- 02
Upload and pick what should move
Choose Gentle portrait for one face, Two people for a couple, Group photo for three or more, or Whole scene when the background should move too. Add a short note only if you want something specific.
- 03
Choose model, length and resolution
Seedance 2.0 Mini at 5 seconds is the cheapest way to see how your photo reacts. Re-run the keepers on Seedance 2.5 or at 1080p. The price is on the button before you start.
- 04
Download and share
Download the MP4 from the result or from Creations. Add music and a caption in CapCut, Canva or your phone’s editor, and say in the caption that the movement is AI-generated.
Face only or the whole photo? Pick the right motion
This is the choice people get wrong most often. Face-only animation keeps a person recognisable but looks stiff; whole-photo animation looks natural but has more room to drift. Match the style to the photo.
| Style | What moves | Best for | Closest to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gentle portrait | Breathing, slow blinks, a small smile, a slight head turn. Background and camera still. | Studio portraits, passport-style photos, memorial videos. | Deep Nostalgia’s face animation, but without a fixed driver sequence. |
| Two people | Both heads turn toward each other, a short glance and a smile, then back to the camera. | Wedding portraits, grandparents, a couple’s first photo. | Not offered as a preset by face-only apps. |
| Group photo | Small, separate blinks, smiles and head turns at slightly different moments. | Family groups, class photos, reunions. | Deep Nostalgia animates one detected face at a time. |
| Whole scene | People carry on what they were doing; hair, clothes, trees and water move; a slow push-in. | Street scenes, beach and garden snapshots, weddings outdoors. | MyHeritage LiveMemory and general image-to-video tools. |
If keeping the face matters more than anything, start with Gentle portrait at 5 seconds. Short, small movements give the model the least chance to change who the person is.
Will it still look like them? Keep faces recognisable
Most “it turned into someone else” results come from the photo, not the model: a tiny face, glare or heavy damage leaves the model guessing. Prepare the photo in this order before you animate it.
| Step | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| 1. Crop to the people | A face that fills more of the frame gives the model more real detail to keep. Leave a little space around heads and shoulders. |
| 2. Scan instead of re-photographing | A flat scan avoids glare, keystone distortion and moiré from glossy paper, which the model would otherwise animate as noise. |
| 3. Repair only what hides the face | Fix a tear across an eye; keep small scratches and grain. Over-smoothed “restored” faces are where identity drift starts. |
| 4. Upscale gently if the face is tiny | A face under about 150 px wide has too little detail. A mild upscale helps; a strong one invents a new face before the animation even starts. |
| 5. Colourise last, or not at all | Colour added by AI is another guess. Animate the original first; colourise a copy only if the family wants it. |
Need to crop, repair or upscale first? Do it on a copy with an image editor or our image tools, then animate the result. Edit the photo with image-to-image ↗
Couples, wedding and group photos
Two or more people in one photo is where face merging, mismatched timing and odd hands appear. These habits keep groups believable.
- Use Two people for a couple. It tells the model exactly who looks at whom, instead of letting everyone move at random.
- Keep group movement small. Group photo asks for separate blinks and smiles, not big gestures, which is what keeps faces from blending.
- Crop a crowded photo. For a class photo, animate a crop of three or four people rather than all thirty; tiny faces cannot hold their identity.
- Expect hands to be the weak spot. Hands resting in laps survive best; avoid notes that ask people to wave or hug.
Price, free credits and watermark
If you searched for an animate image to video AI free option, here is exactly what is free and what costs credits. Each video is charged once, before it starts, at the price on the button; prices below are live from the generator, with a dollar estimate at the Studio monthly plan rate.
| Model · resolution | 5 s | 10 s |
|---|---|---|
| Seedance 2.0 Mini · 480p | 9 credits (~$0.25) | 17 credits (~$0.47) |
| Seedance 2.0 Mini · 720p | 18 credits (~$0.50) | 36 credits (~$1.00) |
| MiniMax H3 · 768P | 26 credits (~$0.72) | 52 credits (~$1.44) |
| MiniMax H3 · 2K | 42 credits (~$1.16) | 83 credits (~$2.30) |
| Wan 3.0 · 480p | 15 credits (~$0.42) | 30 credits (~$0.83) |
| Wan 3.0 · 720p | 30 credits (~$0.83) | 60 credits (~$1.66) |
| Wan 3.0 · 1080p | 60 credits (~$1.66) | 119 credits (~$3.30) |
| Seedance 2.0 Fast · 480p | 18 credits (~$0.50) | 36 credits (~$1.00) |
| Seedance 2.0 Fast · 720p | 39 credits (~$1.08) | 78 credits (~$2.16) |
| Seedance 2.0 Pro · 480p | 30 credits (~$0.83) | 60 credits (~$1.66) |
| Seedance 2.0 Pro · 720p | 65 credits (~$1.80) | 129 credits (~$3.58) |
| Seedance 2.0 Pro · 1080p | 160 credits (~$4.44) | 320 credits (~$8.87) |
| Seedance 2.5 · 480p | 44 credits (~$1.22) | 87 credits (~$2.41) |
| Seedance 2.5 · 720p | 98 credits (~$2.72) | 195 credits (~$5.41) |
| Seedance 2.5 · 1080p | 242 credits (~$6.71) | 483 credits (~$13.39) |
A dash means the model does not offer that resolution. Dollar figures use the cheapest monthly credit (Studio monthly); packs cost a little more per credit.
Free vs paid
| New free account | The sign-up credits are not enough for a video; the cheapest clip needs more. No card is needed to sign up. |
|---|---|
| Free-account videos | Carry a moving tryh3.com watermark. |
| $5 Trial pack (24 credits) | Covers two 5-second Seedance 2.0 Mini clips at 480p, or one at 720p, and unlocks watermark-free downloads. |
| Any pack or plan | Watermark-free MP4 downloads, including the clean copy of videos you made before buying. |
| If a video fails | The credits are returned automatically. A photo Seedance 2.5 rejects costs nothing. |
How much do 10 or 30 old photos cost?
Planning a memorial slideshow or a family reunion reel? Multiply the per-clip price by the number of photos you keep, plus a few re-runs for the photos that need a second try.
| 5-second clip on | 1 photo | 10 photos | 30 photos |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seedance 2.0 Mini · 480p | 9 credits (~$0.25) | 90 credits (~$2.50) | 270 credits (~$7.48) |
| Seedance 2.0 Mini · 720p | 18 credits (~$0.50) | 180 credits (~$4.99) | 540 credits (~$14.97) |
| Wan 3.0 · 720p | 30 credits (~$0.83) | 300 credits (~$8.32) | 900 credits (~$24.95) |
| Seedance 2.5 · 720p | 98 credits (~$2.72) | 980 credits (~$27.17) | 2940 credits (~$81.50) |
Failed videos are refunded, so you only pay for clips that finish. A result you simply do not like is charged; test a photo at 480p first, then re-run the ones you keep at a higher resolution.

Animate old photos into video in Canva, CapCut, MyHeritage or here?
Not every animate AI tool does the same thing. Some move only the face with a fixed sequence, some generate a whole new clip, and some only slide the picture around. Checked on 22 October 2026 from each tool’s own pages.
| Tool | What moves | Faces | Free use | Watermark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MyHeritage Deep Nostalgia | One face at a time, from pre-recorded driver videos (smile, blink, head turn). | Very faithful; motion is a fixed preset. | Several free animations after a free sign-up. | MyHeritage logo for non-subscribers. |
| MyHeritage LiveMemory | The whole photo becomes a short video. | Natural motion; can drift. | A limited number free during promotions; then an annual Photo or Omni plan (20 or 30 videos a year). | An “AI” label on every video. |
| Canva Photo Animation | The picture as a whole: pan, zoom, tumble, brush and ink reveals. | Untouched; nobody blinks or smiles. | Free styles; all styles with Canva Pro. | None on free styles. |
| CapCut | Template effects and editing; best for music, captions and 9:16 framing. | Depends on the template. | Free editor; some effects need Pro. | Depends on the template and plan. |
| Kling | General image-to-video from a prompt. | Good, with prompt control. | Trial credits for new users. | Depends on the plan; check its terms. |
| Vorla, Animate Old Photos and similar sites | One-click photo-to-video, usually 5 seconds. | Varies by site. | Advertise free tries; limits vary. | Varies; read each site’s terms. |
| TryH3 (this page) | Your photo as frame one; portrait, couple, group or whole-scene motion; 5 or 10 s. | Faces start as printed; six models to choose from. | Credits; the $5 Trial pack covers two short 480p clips. | Free accounts only; removed by any purchase. |
Free limits and plans change often; check each tool before you rely on it.
Can you animate old photos into video in Canva? Canva’s Animate button moves the picture itself (it slides, zooms or reveals), but the people in it stay frozen. For a grandparent who actually blinks and smiles, make the clip here first, then drop the MP4 into a Canva video design to add titles, music and the rest of your photos.
Where “bring old photos to life” came from
“Bring old photos to life” is not one meme with one song; it is a format people keep returning to, usually set to soft piano or a family member’s favourite track. These are the milestones.
- February 2021: Deep Nostalgia. MyHeritage launched it on 25 February 2021 with technology licensed from D-ID; it animates one face at a time from pre-recorded driver videos and went viral within days.
- April 2021: more gestures. MyHeritage added extra animation sequences, but the effect stayed face-only.
- November 2024: LiveMemory. On 21 November 2024 MyHeritage released LiveMemory in its mobile app, turning the whole photo into a short video and adding an “AI” label to every clip.
- June 2025: on the web. LiveMemory arrived on the MyHeritage website on 23 June 2025; MyHeritage said over half a million videos had been made by then.
- 2025–2026: general video models. Image-to-video models such as Kling, Runway, Seedance and Wan made the effect a standard feature, and TikTok and Reels filled with grandparents smiling back at their grandchildren.
Why the face changes or flickers, and how to fix it
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| The face turns into someone else | Crop closer, use Gentle portrait at 5 seconds, and try Seedance 2.5. Avoid photos where the face is smaller than a thumbnail. |
| Eyes flicker or go wonky | Usually low resolution or glare on the eyes. Rescan flat, upscale mildly, and keep the motion small. |
| The mouth moves as if talking | The styles here keep mouths closed. Remove any note that mentions speaking or singing; to add a voice, record it separately and lay it over the clip. |
| Faces blend in a group photo | Choose Group photo, crop to fewer people, and avoid big gestures. |
| The colours or tone changed | The prompt keeps black-and-white and sepia as they are. If a model still tints it, re-run on another model or convert the finished clip back to monochrome in your editor. |
| Blurry or soft result | Choose 720p or 1080p, start from a sharper scan, and avoid heavy noise reduction before upload. |
Memorials, consent and privacy
- Ask the family first. A moving photo of someone who has died can comfort one relative and upset another; agree before you post it.
- Say it is AI. The smile and the head turn are generated, not recorded. A line such as “AI animation of a 1950s photo” keeps the family archive honest; TikTok and Instagram also ask for AI labels.
- Only animate photos you may use. Your own family photos are fine; living people need their permission, and photos from museums or archives keep their own rights.
- Know where the photo goes. Your photo is uploaded to our storage and sent to the video model you choose to make the clip; the finished video is saved only in your account and never published. Contact support if you want your uploads removed.
- Keep the original. Animate a copy and store the untouched scan with the family archive.
Animate old photos: FAQ
Is the movement in an animated old photo real?
No. The AI does not know how the person really moved; it invents a plausible blink, smile or head turn based on the face in the picture. The face starts as printed because your photo is the first frame, but everything after that is generated. Share it as an AI animation, not as found footage.
Can I animate old photos for free and download the MP4 without a watermark?
A free account can generate once it has enough credits, but its videos carry a moving tryh3.com watermark, and the sign-up credits alone do not cover a clip. Any purchase removes the watermark, including from earlier videos. A 5-second clip on Seedance 2.0 Mini at 720p costs 18 credits (about $0.50); prices start at 9 credits, and the $5 Trial pack covers two short 480p clips.
Why does my grandfather’s face change, and how do I keep him recognisable?
Faces drift when the model has to guess: a small face, glare, heavy damage or an over-restored photo. Crop to the face, scan the print flat, repair only tears across the face, and use Gentle portrait at 5 seconds. Seedance 2.5 keeps faces steadiest; Seedance 2.0 Mini is the cheap way to test first.
Can two people in one old photo look at each other?
Yes. Choose Two people: both heads turn toward each other, they share a short glance and a small smile, then look back at the camera. It works best when both faces are clear and roughly the same size; a hug or a kiss is beyond what a still photo can show reliably.
How much does it cost to animate 30 old photos, and do failed clips cost credits?
Thirty 5-second clips on Seedance 2.0 Mini at 720p cost 540 credits, about $14.97 at the Studio monthly rate. Failed videos are refunded automatically, so you pay only for clips that finish; budget a few extra runs for photos you want to redo.
Deep Nostalgia, LiveMemory or an image-to-video generator: which should I use?
Deep Nostalgia animates one face with a fixed sequence: very faithful, little choice. LiveMemory and image-to-video generators animate the whole photo: more natural, more room to drift. Here you choose how much moves (portrait, couple, group or scene) and which model does it, with the photo as the first frame.
Is it safe to upload photos of relatives who have passed away?
Your photo is stored to make the video and sent to the model you choose; the finished clip stays in your account and is never published. Before you post, check that close family is comfortable with it, label it as AI, and keep the original scan unchanged in your archive.
